The region’s building stock reflects its tourism history. Resort and hospitality buildings from the 1970s and 1980s, older fibro homes in Airlie Beach, Cannonvale and Proserpine, and rural buildings around Bowen and Collinsville commonly contain bonded asbestos in wall linings, ceilings, eaves, roofing and wet areas. Any building constructed or refurbished before 2004 should be assumed to contain asbestos until tested.
Tropical conditions add urgency. Cyclone Debbie in 2017 damaged a number of resort and commercial buildings, some of which remain unoccupied, and years of weather exposure since can degrade bonded materials to the point where they are reclassified as friable — requiring Class A controls and reassessment before any demolition or redevelopment.

Working on the Whitsunday Islands
Hazclear delivers assessment and removal on island sites as well as the mainland. Island projects are scoped to include barge scheduling, equipment staging, personnel access and the removal of double-wrapped regulated waste from the island to a licensed mainland disposal facility, with waste tracking certificates documenting the full chain of custody as part of our environmental services.
